machine-made Warp

A Modern serif for science, drawn by a pen

Warp is the fourth machine-made typeface: a Modern with vertical stress, for papers and maths. No outline is drawn by hand. Every letter is a few centre-lines swept by one level pen, and its hairlines, serifs and teardrops all come out of that pen.

Abstract. We study the drawing of a thin viscous thread from a heated preform. When the draw ratio exceeds a critical value near 20.2, the steady state loses stability through a Hopf bifurcation and the radius of the fibre oscillates, a regime known as draw resonance. Writing the axial velocity as u(x, t) = U(x) + ε u′(x) eλt, we obtain a linear eigenvalue problem for λ, whose spectrum we compute by Chebyshev collocation on 128 points.

The leading mode depends only weakly on the capillary number Ca; inertia and cooling, not surface tension, set the threshold. Above it, the amplitude grows as (D − Dc)1/2, which is the signature of a supercritical bifurcation (Fig. 3, Table 1). The same scaling holds for drawn glass fibres and for polymer films at Reynolds numbers below 10−3.

Figures and small capitals

The default figures are lining and tabular, for tables and papers. Old-style figures are one feature away, as in the sketch. Small capitals are real small capitals: drawn at 1.1 times the x-height, with heavier hairlines.

From a sketch to a font

Agents write the generator, the tests and the CI. People set the goals and review the proofs.

The pen

A Python port of the approved sketch engine. Each stroke is a centre-line with a pressure per node; a level nib sweeps it. skia-pathops joins the sweep and the loom fits it with a few cubic curves. No outline comes from another font.

Proofs

The sketch engine and the font overlaid for every style; every glyph compared with its pen sweep; equations set by the sketch's maths setter with the font's glyphs; an OCR test against DejaVu Serif.

0.2 adds the OpenType MATH table: stretchy delimiters, radicals and big operators drawn by the pen at each size. 0.3 makes Warp a variable font with weight and optical size axes.
